It happens to the best of us. You mean to stick to your diet, stick to clean eating, avoid the processed foods. But what happens when real life hits you and you slip?
You don't have to feel like everything is erased and all your progress is gone from a bad food decision. I'm talking about the extra serving of pasta. The dessert after dinner. The bowl of cereal when you get home from work and are too tired to cook.
You know what you are eating isn't perfect, but that's life.
So what can you do to come back from these inevitable slip ups?
There are two critical tools that you have at your disposal, arguably, all the time.
Walking
Water
Walking is an INCREDIBLY effective way at lowering blood sugar levels and managing insulin spikes. You do not have to walk for 45 minutes (although, that sounds lovely!). It can be 10... 5.... even 2 minutes! Something is better than nothing. But the more you walk, the faster your blood sugar will come back to normal. The more you walk, the less lethargic you will feel after that meal. The more you walk, the lower your stress hormones will be. All of this will help you feel BETTER.
So don't sit down after your slip up- get up and walk!
Water is also CRITICAL. Water will naturally help dilute some of the excess glucose in your blood stream, as well as help rehydrate you. High blood sugars promote dehydration, so drinking a lot of water after a food slip up can help prevent some of those consequences.
Plain water, water with a dash of pink Himalayan salt and squeeze of lemon, or plain mineral water would be perfect. Do not use water with other artificial or natural flavors it in. This will do the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish.
So the next time you feel guilty over a slip up- Drink some water and go for a walk. It's that simple!
